The moment we're in

Under the Trump administration, we are witnessing an intensified assault on civil liberties against immigrant communities, freedom of speech, the right to protest, labor organizing, public education, due process, and other rights that generations of people fought to secure.

Task force …even going as far as forming Special Task Force 4 to surveil and intimidate VC Defensa, raiding activists' homes in California and Minnesota.

Mass deportation operations, political intimidation, expanded surveillance, attacks on dissent, and the criminalization of entire communities are being used to limit opposition to the Trump administration and the ever-concentrating power of the tyranny of the rich.

Across the country, organizers, press, students, and community leaders have faced retaliation to restrict their ability to organize. Here in Ventura County, organizations such as VC Defensa have faced attacks and intimidation attempts as part of a broader effort to weaken community resistance and discourage collective action.

Historically, we can understand that when our government has targeted one group, the attacks have not remained confined. Efforts to undermine the rights of immigrants are inseparable from broader attacks on democratic participation and the ability of ordinary people to organize in defense of their communities.

El pueblo unido, jamás será vencido.

The people united will never be defeated.

La Defensa del Pueblo will be a space to analyze the current political moment, learn from the experiences of communities on the front lines of these struggles, strengthen relationships across movements, and develop a shared strategy for defending our rights and our collective future.

One year after the Glass House Farms raids

One year after the federal immigration raids at Glass House Farms in Camarillo and Carpinteria, Ventura County remains a symbol of both the escalating assault on immigrant communities and the growing resistance to that assault.

The July 2025 operation was one of the largest workplace immigration raids in recent U.S. history. We witnessed the deployment of heavily armed federal agents, the use of chemical weapons against protesters, the detention of our community members as well as U.S. citizens, and the disruption of hundreds of families across Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. This resulted in the detention of more than 360 workers which drew national attention to the human consequences of mass deportation policies. During the raid, farmworker Jaime Alanis lost his life after suffering catastrophic injuries after being chased by ICE agents. His death became a tragic symbol of the climate of fear created by increasingly aggressive enforcement of cruel policies.

This event did not occur in isolation. Across the country, the current administration has expanded …

We refuse to be silent

However, we, the people, have refused to remain silent.

In response to the raids, communities organized rapid response networks, legal defense efforts, mutual aid campaigns, public education initiatives, and mass mobilizations. Here in Ventura County, residents continue to build one of the largest community-based rapid response efforts in California, demonstrating that organization remains one of the most effective tools available to defend democratic rights and vulnerable communities.

Aquí vivimos, aquí quedamos.

We live here, we stay here.

La Defensa del Pueblo seeks to bring together those experiences, strengthen relationships across sectors, and work to develop a common strategy for confronting the challenges that lie ahead during this administration and beyond.

Ventura County is the front line

Ventura County occupies a unique position within California and the United States. We are one of the country's most productive agricultural regions, which generates billions of dollars annually through food production… more data on VC

The people whose labor makes our economy prosper often experience some of the region's deepest inequalities. Immigrant families continue to face low wages, housing insecurity, limited workplace protections, political exclusion, and scarce support for their legal procedures.
